Explaining the Different Types of Heavy Duty Storage Shelving

Finding the right type of shelving for your warehouse or workshop can be a daunting task given the various different options to choose from on the market today. There are many different types of heavy-duty shelving you can incorporate in your business and many different ways they can be put to use. Some people may be looking for large scale, industrial storage and organization for big warehouses with different kinds of inventory to store. Others may just be looking for organization for their home and everyday uses. It can be hard to determine which type of heavy-duty shelving you will benefit most from or even whether you need heavy duty shelving at all. But worry not, we are here to help you out to put an end to this dilemma.

heavy duty storage shelving

Steel Shelving

These types of shelves are probably the most used and most inexpensive on this list as they are most commonly used in warehouses and in retail businesses. They are best suited for small products or products that can be placed in a box. Steel can be used for the making of some of the sturdiest heavy duty storage shelving. But if you do decide to get steel shelving, you also need to decide on the type you want to get. There are two main types: the clip in version and nut and bolt. Nut and bolt setups are more outdated, they take a longer time to set up and can’t be easily reorganized to accommodate larger products. Clip style steel shelving, on the other hand, is much more flexible and it is easier to assemble – you only need to clip the shelve at the desired height and you are good to go.

Rivet Shelving

Rivet shelving is similar to steel shelving in many ways, it is just as easy to assemble as the clip style steel shelving, but it is much sturdier and can be used to store heavier objects. Its rivet style construction allows for very fast assembly and even greater precision when you are reorganizing or determining what height you want each shelve to be. There are holes placed all along the support beams of the shelves separated within a couple of centimetres, so you can get just the right height on each shelf. This type of heavy duty storage shelving is very versatile, the construction is made from steel but the shelves can be wooden or made from a wire mesh.

Wire Shelving

This type of shelving is designed to provide greater visibility of the products that are placed on it, the only difference from this type of heavy duty storage shelving and the steel or rivet versions is that it is not that sturdy and it can’t support heavy objects. Wire shelving is optimally used when paired with colour coded storage boxes, its wire mesh design allows the boxes to be viewed from all angles and makes locating them fast and easy. They are also easy to assemble and they don’t weigh much, which makes the process a lot faster.

Bulk Rack Shelving

Bulk Rack Shelving

Bulk rack shelving is not bulky at all, it is the smallest on the list so far, in fact, it is barely considered heavy duty storage shelving. It is best suited for garage storage and workshops. It can be easily assembled – especially because of its small dimensions it fits in small places and it is mostly used for hand storage. There are also mobile versions of this type of shelving that allow you to reorganize entire completed shelves without having to take everything off and put it back on.

Clipless Shelving

These shelves are very similar to bulk rack shelving. They are also small, they are not suitable for heavy storage and can be found mostly in garages and workshops. They are constructed from steel bracing and the shelves are made from particle boards. They are very easy to assemble and can be done by a single person. This type of shelving can be found in workshops for a convenient storing of parts.

mobile shelving

Mobile shelving

Mobile shelving is a great solution if you want to be able to move around already stocked shelves. With these types of shelves you don’t need to worry which shelf you fill up first, you can always rearrange them into the order that works for you best. They do take a little bit longer to put together than the previous options, and because of their mobility, they can’t support too much weight. However, they are great for transporting goods in large quantities from one spot of the warehouse to another safely.

Pallet racks

Pallet racks are not so much designed for storing goods but rather for storing your pallets when not in use. They help make sure that your warehouse’s pallets are organized and safe in one spot so that they can be reused plenty of times without breaking. Pallet racks also help contribute to a good flow of work – forklift operators know where to leave an empty pallet and where to get one for loading. These types of racks are very large and very sturdy as they are constructed from steel and have both metal and wood in the shelves.
