Importance of Prostate Health

The prostate is a small gland found just below the bladder and it wraps around the upper part of the urethra. Its main purpose is to produce most of the fluid in semen. The three main conditions that occur in the prostate are:

  • Chronic or acute prostatitis, which is characterised by inflammation. It can be caused by a bacterial infection or an unknown cause.
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is a noncancerous form of prostate enlargement, leading to lower urinary tract symptoms. This condition is one of the most common ones in elderly men
  • Prostate cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the prostate and is the 4th leading cause of death in men

The earliest stages of prostate cancer are often asymptomatic, and most prostate issues are accompanied by symptoms that are rather uncomfortable, such as painful ejaculation, painful urination, frequent need to urinate, waking up throughout the night to urinate, erectile dysfunction, pain in the pelvic area, hips or lower back.

Research has shown that the proper supplement for prostate can help prevent prostate problems and relieve symptoms, typically by decreasing inflammation.

Common Prostate Supplement Ingredients

Saw Palmetto

This ingredient is one of the most common ones in prostate supplements. Saw palmetto berries and extract, in particular, are used to treat urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. This is thanks to the anti-inflammatory effects of saw palmetto. 160mg of saw palmetto a day for 3 months can improve prostate symptoms and urinary flow rate. Furthermore, this ingredient is shown to block the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells. However, even though this ingredient is considered safe to use, some people may not tolerate it. Side effects can include dizziness, headaches, constipation, nausea and allergic reactions.

Beta-Sitosterol

This ingredient is a plant compound that belongs to a group of substances known as phytosterols. These substances are produced by plants, and they’re basically natural steroids that are linked to a few health benefits, like lower cholesterol. Beta-sitosterol has shown to provide antioxidating and anti-inflammatory benefits. It’s shown to also reduce inflammation in men with urinary tract symptoms and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Flower Pollen Extract

Flower pollen extracts are ingredients used for chronic prostatitis. This condition is common in younger men, and it’s characterised by painful ejaculation, urination, sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain. While anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and aspirin can help reduce pain and inflammation, many people use flower pollen extract as a natural alternative. Just 1 gram of pollen extract a day can help reduce chronic prostatitis symptoms. The most common pollen extract blend is Graminex, which is a mix of ryegrass pollen, corn pollen and timothy pollen.

Pygeum

Pygeum is extracted from the bark of the African cherry tree, and it’s a common ingredient found in prostate supplementation. It reduces inflammation from prostatitis and inhibits cancer cell growth. Further, it improved symptoms associated from benign prostatic hyperplasia and it can significantly improve urinary flow.

It’s typically found in supplements used for bladder and UTIs. However, the effects of nettle root for prostate aren’t studied well enough so their role in preventing prostatic cancer isn’t clear.

Vitamin E and Vitamin D

Vitamin D and vitamin E are two vitamins commonly found in prostate health supplements. Vitamin D is necessary for a wide range of vital processes in your body, including bone health and immune function. However, in order for these vitamins to be considered useful, the people taking them need to be deficient in them in the first place. Vitamin E also features antioxidant properties and it protects against prostate cancer.
