The Most Commonly Used Rigid Barrier Systems In Australia – Part 1

Road safety barrier systems are very important part for the safety on roads today, because they ensure safe and efficient transport. In Australia, safety road barriers can be seen on every major road, and the most common types are the rigid safety road barriers. The rigid safety road barriers are usually made of concrete and they are considered as the most effective. They are designed to absorb the force of a car crashing into them, and to redirect the out of control vehicles. The rigid barriers are more durable structures when compared with the flexible and semi-rigid safety road barriers because these two types of road safety barrier systems can easily be damaged when a car hits them.


Almost on every road across Australia, you can notice different types of rigid safety road barriers. Here are the most commonly used rigid road safety barrier systems in Australia.

New Jersey Barrier System – The New Jersey road safety barrier systems are extensively used all around Australia, because they provide a satisfactory level of safety. This road safety barrier type is generally used for preventing shallow-angle impacts, minimizing the sheet metal body damage. The New Jersey safety road barriers are still in use, but the shape is modified to F-Type barriers. This means that the original New Jersey road safety barrier systems are no longer installed on the roads. The vehicle bumper could tip a vehicle over by impacting the upper face upwards with a New Jersey road safety barrier. Also, the wheel side rubbing forces could provide addition lift and exposed aggregate or similar rough surfaces should be avoided. The New Jersey road safety barrier systems have a 75mm vertical face in front, included to provide an allowance for future pavement overlays.

F-Type Barrier System – The F-Type road safety barrier systems are very similar to the New Jersey barrier systems, with only one big difference – the height of the lower sloped surface is lower. This major difference significantly reduces the lifting of an impacting vehicle, which reduces the possibility of vehicle tip-over, especially important for smaller vehicles. The New Jersey road safety barrier with a 75mm asphalt overlay results in a lower sloped face, almost identical to the one of the F-Type barrier without the 75mm overlay.
