When you purchase a plant, it usually comes in a compost placed in a plastic pot. Thanks to the nutrients in the compost, the plant can sustain that way for some time, even for several months. But that’s just it – once it has grown enough, it will need re-potting. And let’s face it, the pot that came with it was just unattractive. Time to get your gorgeous plant the container it deserves!
Size Matters!
When choosing a planter, it’s helpful to know that planters come in a variety of sizes. You should find out how much your plant is supposed to grow in order to find the right pot for it. If we’re talking about some kind of herb, like basil or tiny flower plant, a small pot with a diameter of 8 or 13 cm can provide enough room for it to thrive. On the other hand, if you’re planning to plant a small fruit tree, or a large floor-standing plant, you may need to consider one that’s at least 35 cm high to accommodate it properly.
Consider the Surroundings
The pot you choose should not only suit the plant, but also the environment it’s placed in. In the case of a garden plant, you should choose a pot that will function as a stylish feature. If your exterior is more modern, consider getting some elegant cube pots which will enhance the straight lines of your house with their geometrical look. If your home is more on the traditional side, round planters, and even recycled containers can help bring a dose of rusticity. For house plants, match your containers with your interior style. For instance, white cube pots with their straight lines look great in Scandinavian themes.
Choose the Right Material
If you are going to place your plants outdoors, they will need something sturdy enough to withstand the elements. In that case, glazed ceramic pots or concrete pots are a great choice as they will be unaffected by any weather and are heavy enough so they won’t get tipped over by some animal. These pots are also suitable for large trees and shrubs. If you want something that is easier to move and won’t be too heavy on your back, fibreglass pots are the perfect solution. Fibreglass can resist all kinds of outdoor conditions and doesn’t easily chip or break when dropped or mishandled, unlike concrete and terracotta planters.
For small indoor plants, plastic containers are just the right choice. They are lightweight and come in many shapes, sizes, and colours to suit all kinds of interiors. Plastic planters don’t last as long as fibreglass or terracotta pots and their colour might fade over time. However, you won’t be concerned about them breaking if you have small children or pets running around the house. Some plastic pots also come with an integrated self-watering feature which is great for busy or forgetful gardeners.
